Podcasts

From: Mark A. Spawn

I would like to offer some resources that may be of interest to my colleagues. I prepared the following announcement if you would like to post it and/or share it with the LETDANYS membership:

We are pleased to share our podcast library with the LETDANYS. We have titles in a number of areas relevant to New York State law enforcement:

· AMBER Alert – series (sample guidelines and other documents on our Policy/Toolkit page)

· Child Abuse/Mandated Reporting

· Detecting Impaired Drivers

· Syringe Access Programs

· Sharing of DIR’s (sample policy component on our Policy/Toolkit page)

· Sex Offender Management – series (sample policy and resources on our Policy/Toolkit page)

We have found that these audio files are a convenient method to provide information and training to officers and staff. They can be played from a computer, attached to an e-mail, burned to CD, uploaded to an mp3 player, and more. Current podcasts range from 2-3 minutes up to 13 minutes in length. Some departments send them wirelessly to their in-car computers, and at least one agency has inserted some podcasts into their electronic operations manual. We continue to develop titles on topics of interest to the policing community and we welcome your suggestions:apb@NYchiefs.org

Thank you – Mark A. Spawn

POLL: Basic Course for Police – Watertown, NY

From:  Sgt. C. Donoghue

I am trying to find out whether there is any interest for a “Basic Course for Police Officers” class at the Black River/St. Lawrence Valley Police Academy (Watertown, NY) with a start date on or about September 27, 2010.

Cost would be about $1,500.00 per officer which includes uniforms, books, supplies, and YMCA membership.

Tuition rates are reduced for agencies that provide instructors during the academy ($25 per hour reduction).

Please contact Sgt. C. Donoghue at 315-778-7403 or cdonoghue@watertown-ny.gov

First Response and Autism

From:
Dixie Sipher Yonkers
Bureau of Clinical & Behavioral Solutions
NYS Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities

Albany, NY  12229

NYS OMRDD has developed a brief booklet and associated laminated pocket card on autism and first response. The actions of someone with autism during an emergency can easily be mistaken for defiance, disrespect or even deliberate escalation. It is important for first responders to understand how individuals with autism may react on the scene and to be able to modify response techniques to promote safe outcomes. These materials are available free of charge, in hard copy or electronically. I am writing to see if your association has any interest in making these materials available to your membership?

Please share this information with others in your organization, and feel free contact me if you have any questions or to request materials.
