Limited English Speaking People

Criminal justice practitioners in every field are sometimes faced with victims, families, witnesses and suspects that have either no or very limited skills in the English language. Sometimes, there are even occasions where it might be difficult to determine what nationality it is that you will need to seek assistance from, when trying to interpret what is being communicated.

Attached is a “card” that you might wish to save as a file in your agency for future use. There are others available. I have tried to limit the file size as best as possible. It is still over 1.5 meg., so your e-mail filter might have “stripped” it. If so, go here to download a full copy:

http://www.ocjs.state.oh.us/Publications/Pocket%20Card.pdf

Essentially, the idea behind the card is to show it to the person, they will locate their language and point that out to you (in English, the card will say “I speak ……”).
