Basic Investigative Photography

The Division of Criminal Justice Services periodically delivers specialized training to criminal investigators and others in a supportive role. The Office of Public Safety in conjunction with the New York State Police and Town of Colonie Police Department will be conducting a one-week Basic Investigative Photography course February 23-27, 2009.

This training is intended to develop the necessary skills for a crime scene photographer to effectively photograph a crime scene and the evidence contained therein by means of instruction and participation in a variety of hands-on exercises. Students will begin the course by learning the basic fundamental skills of photography and camera operation and then progress to more advanced skills specific to a crime scene. This course is also approved by the Municipal Police Training Council as a prerequisite to the Police Crime Scene and Evidence Specialist course.

 Instructional topics will include:

·Overview of basic photography equipment

·Lighting techniques

·Film/digital photography

·Guidelines for photographing a crime scene

·Fundamental techniques of photography

·Photographing evidence for comparison purposes

·Night and low light conditions

·Macro photography

A detailed list of required materials students must bring to class for the successful completion of the course is included on the attached application. Although the Office of Public Safety recommends a single-lens-reflex camera be brought to the training because of its versatility in taking crime scene photographs, those agencies that do not have a SLR camera are not discouraged from attending the training. It may not be possible to successfully complete all practical exercises and a separate skills test without the use of a SLR or equivalent camera.

Due to the hands-on nature of the training, enrollment for the class will be limited. Registrations will be processed through the Division of Criminal Justice Services.Preference will be given to those individuals submitting applications for the Police Crime Scene and Evidence Specialist course. A separate registration form is required for each course. You must receive confirmation on attendance. Please fax the enclosed registration (click here to open/download) to the Office of Public Safety (518-457-0145) no later than February 16, 2009.

If you have any questions about the training, please contact Senior Training Technician Deborah Alber by email at deborah.alber@dcjs.state.ny.us or by telephone at (518) 457-1246.
